BBN isn’t going to care that Mark Pope and the Kentucky basketball team lost the majority of its best recruits after John Calipari left. Expectations will remain high for the former Kentucky athlete as he begins his first season as head coach.
Pope, who comes from BYU, plans to implement a new, fast-paced, and modern offence, and he is gradually putting the pieces in place to do so. Nonetheless, Pope has enormous expectations in his first season with the Cats.
His arrival with the 1996 NCAA Championship team cleared the door for those expectations, and they informed him that banners will be displayed in Rupp Arena sooner rather than later.
During a recent appearance on the Paul Finebaum Show, Pope joked about the pressure he felt from former Kentucky players during his first press conference at Rupp Arena.
“What was really brilliant as I walked on back, every single one of those players threatened me that if we don’t put up banners soon, they’re coming for me, and that’s the way this is supposed to be,” said Pope.
The Cats are a blue-blood team that is projected to be among the best in the country. While they were unable to persuade Dan Hurley or Scott Drew to come to Lexington, they were able to recruit an alumnus who was coaching a Power Five program at the highest level.
With transfers and recruits already showing interest in the program, Pope’s potential is limitless, and maybe more information about those eager to play for him next season will be released soon.
BBN’s expectations are appropriately high, and he is aware of this.
