According to Bob Klapisch of NJ.com, the New York Yankees are poised to make significant changes following their disastrous 2023 season.
The Yankees fired hitting instructor Dillon Lawson during the All-Star break, but the next termination is expected to be far more significant.
However, it does not appear that the man in question will be the most accountable.
“Sources within the organization have indicated someone has to be sacrificed for the debacle,” said Klapisch. “And it won’t be (general manager Brian) Cashman.”
If not Cashman, it appears that manager Aaron Boone will lose his job. Klapisch says this is a possibility, and while Boone has been more relaxed recently, Klapisch adds he is “highly unlikely” to be guaranteed a job next season. There is a potential he has already been told he will not be returning next year.
When Cashman was asked about Boone’s job security during a recent press conference earlier this week, the general manager did not exactly give his captain a vote of confidence. Instead, he stated that everyone would be evaluated, including himself. These assessments will be conducted by managing partner Hal Steinbrenner.
Boone is an easy scapegoat in this situation, but he does not deserve the majority of the blame. That would be Cashman, who built a faulty squad and failed to acquire a left fielder, among other missteps.
Aside from Boone, the Yankees might make changes in their scouting, player development, and analytics departments, as they have previously failed in these areas.
