Tennessee football linebacker Elijah Herring is one of four players from Josh Heupel’s program that have entered the transfer portal this spring. This spring, Herring was joined in the portal by cornerback Malik Ganaway, defensive lineman Camron Douglas, and cornerback Cristian Conyer.
Herring was a three-star recruit out of high school and applied through the transfer portal as such. He is the spring portal’s 23rd-best linebacker and ranked 296th overall.
As a sophomore, Herring was expected to contribute significantly on defence for the Vols. He ended his second season at Rocky Top with 79 tackles, one sack, and one pass deflection. He had the option of returning to Tennessee’s deep linebacker room for his junior season, but he elected to transfer.
In the portal, Herring discovered his new home across the Volunteer State. He revealed on Friday that he had committed to the Memphis Tigers. The 6-foot-3, 238-pound linebacker has the potential to be a game changer for the Tigers and dominate the AAC over the next two years.
Herring’s transfer surprised me when he first entered the portal. He was expected to play for the Vols this season, so his departure felt like a loss for Tennessee’s defensive depth and experience.
After the 2024 season with Memphis, the Newburn, Georgia native and Murfreesboro Riverdale High School alumnus will have experience playing in all parts of the state. The Tigers beat Colorado to Herring’s pledge, and he will be the 23rd player to join the Memphis team this recruiting season.
