Gauff is presently competing at the Rome Open, where she qualified for the quarterfinals after defeating Spain’s Badosa 5-7, 6-4, 6-1 in the round of 16. After the match, Gauff’s coach Gilbert, in a post on his official account on the social media platform X — previously known as Twitter — criticised the Spaniard for using unfair means during the contest and believed that her catching three tosses in a row and was not penalized for time violation was ‘beyond ridiculous’.

“you have heard me say this so many times, catching your on ball toss on serv is should not be allowed, how can u catch 3 tosses in arow and not at least get time violation is beyond ridiculous, also allowing 45 catches in a match and nothing in rules is mind boggling and such disadvantage to returner,” wrote the author. Gauff will now play Qinwen Zheng in the last eight on Tuesday.
