Denver Broncos rookie quarterback Bo Nix was selected 12th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft. His head coach, Sean Payton, appears to be happy with the passing. Bo Nix’s lack of outstanding arm power and athleticism did not detract from his potential as an NFL prospect. Nix appears to fit in nicely with the Denver Broncos’ offensive style.
For those who criticized the selection, only time will tell if they were correct, but you have to ask why the Broncos ranked Nix as the third-best quarterback on their own board. Maybe, just maybe, professional football coaches and front-office personnel understand what they are doing. During rookie minicamp, Sean Payton praised his new quarterback:
“”Throw location. When asked how Nix had a successful practice, Payton responded, “He had two or three down-the-field throws today.” “It’s almost like seeing a skilled golfer. When you watch his game over the course of two years, you can see that he plays with patience. The ball is released, and — I don’t want to use the word dull; that’s not the appropriate description — each play results in quite sound decisions. The efficiency with which he operates. All of that.””
Maybe Sean Payton is just being kind, but he comes from Bill Parcells’ old-school coaching lineage, so it’s far more probable that Payton is simply telling the truth. With 61 career college starts, perhaps Bo Nix is already adjusting to an NFL offence. For the Broncos, it’s a much-needed step forward after parting with Russell Wilson.
They just needed to bring in a rookie quarterback, and Bo Nix has all the potential to be the answer. Head coach Sean Payton was able to create a competitive team in 2023 while having a bottom-seven quarterback, so what happens if QB Bo Nix develops into an outstanding passer?
