One experienced tight end continues his tour of the NFC North.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Thursday that the Minnesota Vikings had signed tight end Robert Tonyan. He joins a new team in the division after starting his career with the Green Bay Packers and spending the previous season with the Chicago Bears.
Tonyan, 30, has had some success as a pass-catcher, most notably in 2020, when he caught 52 catches for 586 yards and 11 touchdowns with Green Bay. However, he sustained a ruptured ACL during the 2021 season and was ineffective in Chicago last season, totaling 11 receptions for 112 yards and no touchdowns.
Meanwhile, TJ Hockenson, a two-time Pro Bowler, is the Vikings’ starting tight end. However, Tonyan, who stands 6-foot-5 and weighs 240 pounds, may still be able to contribute as a blocker and situational target in the red zone. Tonyan is the latest player to flip sides in the Vikings-Packers rivalry this summer.
