Earlier this week, we asked our readers to rate their confidence in Matt Eberflus as he enters his third season.
As the 2023 season progressed, my desire to see ‘Flus cleansed increased. Despite having the defence play great football in the second half of the season, the three historic late-game breakdowns proved too much. He didn’t seem like the right person to lead this team into the future.
When the season finished, it became clear that they intended to choose Caleb Williams first overall, so I requested a full house cleaning. I wanted Eberflus dismissed and a completely new coaching staff hired to work with the best quarterback prospect the club has ever landed.
However, Eberflus stayed and hired a new defensive coordinator to assist him in leading the defence. He fired practically all of his offensive coaches, and I was thrilled with the team they gathered to assist Caleb Williams.
I still have reservations about Eberflus, but I appreciate how the offseason has gone so far.
Perhaps a more talented roster and a trusted offensive playcaller will persuade him to abandon his conservative tendencies.
