The Denver Broncos will begin a new era this autumn, with quarterback Bo Nix hoping to lead them to the promised land after being picked in the first round. According to Jeff Legwold of ESPN, as he becomes more acquainted with the Broncos organization, he speaks highly of his new head coach, Sean Payton, mentioning his “pedigree”.
Nix was selected with the 12th overall choice in the previous NFL Draft, making him the sixth signal-caller chosen in the first round out of the University of Oregon. Last season, he threw for 4,508 yards, 45 touchdowns, and three interceptions, leading the Ducks to a Fiesta Bowl victory over Liberty. Nix stated his delight about playing for Denver.
“I’m super excited … can’t wait to get out and about and go see everything,” Nix stated. “This city is fantastic. I can’t believe I get to wear a Broncos jersey and follow in the footsteps of so many greats. I don’t take that lightly, and I won’t take it for granted. Pressure provides opportunity. I believe that the more pressure and responsibility you have, the more you need to go out there and continuously earn it.
Nix, according to Payton, is “like watching a good golfer”
Nix played three seasons of college football at Auburn before transferring to Oregon for his last two years. Drew Brees has received numerous NFL parallels, not just because of his measurements, but also because of his relationship with Payton, who was the previous head coach of the New Orleans Saints. He compared seeing Nix play to “watching a good golfer.”
“It’s almost like watching a good golfer,” Payton explained. “When you watch his game over the course of two years, you notice a certain patience in his play. The ball comes out, and — I don’t want to use the word dull; that’s not the correct word, but really excellent decisions. He operates efficiently with each play. “Your first exposure to huddle, snap count, verbiage can be difficult, but I thought he threw it well.”
A crowded quarterback room for Denver.
The Broncos’ quarterback position has been in serious doubt for several seasons, with Russell Wilson being touted as a potential franchise revitalizer, but both parties have since moved on. Aside from Nix, they have Jarrett Stidham on the roster and added another player at the position by dealing for former New York Jets first-round pick Zach Wilson. When asked who will take first-team reps, Payton did not have a definitive answer for the reporters.
“We’ll figure it out,” Payton said at minicamp when asked about the workload Nix and other quarterbacks will face in the near future, according to Legwold of ESPN. ” …Reps are vital for young guys. But we’ll start with a rotation and then go from there.
In any case, the Broncos are hoping to improve after another poor season last year, when they ended 8-9 and third in the AFC West, which is only growing stronger with teams like the Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Chargers in the division. Their first game of the season will be against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday, September 8.
