Cooper, on the other hand, will be 30 next season and has a history of injuries. Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com reports that the Browns may decide to wait before making a long-term commitment.
“An extension for Cooper doesn’t necessarily appear imminent,” Cabot wrote in her most recent Q&A column on May 17. “The Browns have two options: do something before the season or wait and see how things unfold. But there’s no disputing Cooper has been one of Berry’s better acquisitions, and the Browns wouldn’t have gone 11-6 last season without him.
Browns general manager Andrew Berry has raved about Cooper. In March, he hinted at perhaps extending the five-time Pro Bowler’s contract.
“Look, Coop is a Pro Bowl-caliber receiver,” Berry added. “He’s played exceptionally well for us over the last two years. He’s a commanding presence in the locker room. We adore him. So with players like that, you want to make sure you can have them for as long as possible, and we’ll work through all of that at the appropriate moments.”
Amari Cooper has thrived. Despite the Browns’ unstable quarterback situation.
Cooper carried the Browns’ passing attack last season, despite receiving passes from four different quarterbacks. His most impressive performance occurred on Christmas Eve against the Houston Texans. He caught 11 receptions for 265 yards, a team single-game record.
“Records are intended to be broken. At the end of the day, it’s just numbers. “I don’t take it for granted, but it’s the past,” Cooper stated on January 10. “I always tell myself, you know, I want to look back on my career in that nostalgic type of way that I think you’re alluding to after I’m done playing.”
The Browns intend to provide Cooper with a more consistent quarterback situation coming season. Deshaun Watson is anticipated to be ready for Week One. Cooper has made 51 catches for 870 yards and four scores in 12 games with Watson.
Following the trade, the Browns extended Jerry Jeudy.
This offseason, the Cleveland Browns extended a wide receiver’s contract. After acquiring Jerry Jeudy in a trade in March, the organization chose to sign him to a new contract.
The Browns and Jeudy agreed to a three-year agreement worth up to $58 million. Of that amount, $41 million is completely guaranteed. The team formally confirmed the extension on Tuesday, March 19.
In return for Jeudy, Cleveland traded a fifth-round pick and a sixth-round pick in 2024 to the Denver Broncos.
Jeudy was drafted in the first round, but he has failed to live up to expectations. The Broncos drafted him 15th overall in 2020. He has 3,053 yards on 211 receptions and 11 touchdowns in his career.
The Browns will also consider Elijah Moore, who is approaching the final year of his deal. Former third-round picks David Bell and Cedric Tillman will also compete for reps.
