Earlier this afternoon, Mike Garafolo reported that Washington was preparing to recruit Brandon Sosna as its new cap guru, following the departure of Rob Rogers earlier this spring.
Sosna has been with the Lions since 2022, working alongside Washington’s Assistant GM, Lance Newmark, for a few years in Detroit. Even in his brief time there, he made a strong impression on Lions General Manager Brad Holmes.
“It’s been really cool to see his growth in this role,” Holmes stated on Tuesday. “Last year was his first free agency, and I thought he did an excellent job. He outdid himself again this year. With all of these transactions, I and (coach) Dan Campbell can talk with him about the players we’re seeking, but Sosna and (chief operating officer) Mike Disner are in charge of getting it done. As always, it’s a full partnership, all hands on deck, and I honestly believe this was our greatest free agency since we’ve been here.”
Sosna reports to Disner, who was promoted to his current football/business hybrid position soon after Holmes and Campbell were hired in 2021. Sosna, a newbie, has swiftly established a reputation for knowledge and work ethic, assisting the Lions in navigating the difficulties of the NFL pay cap and utilizing many of the CBA’s sophisticated mechanisms.
Prior to joining the Lions, Sosna was the Executive Senior Associate Athletic Director/Chief of Staff for the USC football program, where he coordinated the hiring of Lincoln Riley.
According to the Lions website:
Sosna’s duties at USC included managing the day-to-day operations of the entire athletics program, overseeing the department’s external communications and revenue-generating teams, providing administrative oversight of the football program, and acting as athletics’ lead contract negotiator. Throughout his tenure at USC, Sosna oversaw the rebuilding and renovation of the Trojan football team and athletic department. He was also credited as the “architect” of USC Head Coach Lincoln Riley’s hiring process in the 2022 offseason, and he played an important part in USC’s transition to the Big Ten Conference.
According to numerous stories, Sosna is a man whose star is ascendant. It would be fantastic for him to build a name for himself in Washington, but he appears to be aiming for “future GM” if he continues to impress.
