Joe Ryan pitched seven scoreless innings, Byron Buxton hit two of Minnesota’s four home runs, and the Twins defeated the Washington Nationals 10-0 on Tuesday, snapping a seven-game losing streak. Jose Miranda and Willi Castro both homered as the Twins snapped their longest losing streak since an eight-game skid in April 2018.
Minnesota scored 12 runs during the slump. Ryan (3-3) allowed three hits and two walks while striking out six, rebounding from a defeat to the Yankees in which he gave up four runs in 5 1/3 innings. Washington starter Patrick Corbin (1-5) allowed eight runs on nine hits, three of which were home runs, and three walks in six innings. He struck out three and his ERA rose to 6.29.
Jacob Young contributed two of Washington’s three hits. The Nationals, who scored 12 runs on Monday night to end their five-game losing streak, were shut out for the fifth time this season. Buxton homered in the second inning to make it 1-0. Castro walked, advanced to third on Kyle Farmer’s single, and scored when Santana grounded into a double play. Manuel Margot led off the third inning with an infield single and stole second.
Miranda homered to left with two outs, giving his team a 4-0 lead. Ryan retired the first eight Nationals batters until Young’s third-inning single. Carlos Correa of the Twins walked with one out in the fifth inning. Buxton added to his lead with a two-out home hit to centre, making the score 6-0. In the seventh inning, Farmer walked, stole second, and scored on Santana’s double to left.
Santana advanced to third on a groundout and scored on Corbin’s wild pitch, increasing the lead to 8-0. Max Kepler walked with one out in the seventh, and Castro homered to right centre off Jacob Burnes, making the score 10-0. —
