Fitzgerald described the announcement as heartbreaking, but said she is eternally grateful for the memories.

“It’s been a privilege to be a part of the Hawkeye family for the past 24 years,” Fitzgerald said in a statement. “When Lisa, Jan, and I first arrived on college, we dreamed of filling arenas and hanging trophies. Those ambitions become a reality thanks to the women who participated in our program and the Hawkeye community.

The announcement follows Lisa Bluder’s retirement. Jan Jensen was unveiled as the Hawkeyes’ new head coach at a press conference earlier this month.
