Sean Payton hasn’t been the New Orleans Saints’ head coach in two seasons, but Saints fans can’t help but notice him whenever he appears in the headlines or makes an unusual comment. The most recent comment he made was on the QB triumvirate he has in Denver.
For those Saints fans who are unfamiliar with Payton’s quarterback room in Denver, the Broncos traded for former second-round pick Zach Wilson and used their first-round pick on Oregon’s Bo Nix. They also have Jarrett Stidham in the quarterback room.
This prompted Payton to describe his quarterbacks in the strangest way possible.
Sean Payton refers to his current quarterbacks as “orphan dogs”
Payton left the Saints following the 2021 season, a year after Drew Brees retired from the NFL. The Saints almost missed the postseason in 2021, and it was a very up and down season. Payton decided to move away from coaching the next offseason, taking a year off before returning in 2023 to coach the Broncos.
While Payton boosted the Broncos slightly in 2023, they finished with a losing record and missed the playoffs. He cut his losses with Russell Wilson, and Nix appears to be Payton’s next experiment at quarterback.
Payton has been dubbed the “quarterback whisperer” throughout his career, but he has struggled to find a good quarterback since leaving the Saints.
Dennis Allen has taken over as head coach in New Orleans, and the team has gone 16-18 since Payton’s departure. It’s unlikely that he’d describe quarterbacks in the same way because he’s a defensive-minded guy, and the analogy is strange to begin with.
