Franchise left tackles don’t come along very often, and when they do, teams seldom let them leave town via free agency or trade, giving the player plenty of negotiating power when it comes time for that big contract extension.
That is exactly the scenario the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have found themselves in with Tristan Wirfs, as we have now discovered. More information about what he’s looking for in his new position.
Rick Stroud of The Tampa Bay Times posted a piece regarding Wirfs’ holdout, asking, “How much will Wirfs eventually sign for? Probably a million or more more than the four-year, $112 million contract the Lions paid tackle Penei Sewell.”
That’s how huge positions work in the sense that every big possible contract would use the prior big contract as a measuring stick, and in this case, Wirfs apparently wants to beat Sewell by just a million dollars.
Wirfs has been the quiet anchor of this offence for years, and he played a key role in the team’s stunning run to the Divisional Round of the playoffs last season behind first-year quarterback Baker Mayfield.
Tampa Bay secured new contracts for Mayfield and Mike Evans this offseason, and it only seems a matter of time before they do the same for Wirfs.
This is not the type of athlete to fool with, and no Bucs fan wants to see him wear a new uniform anytime soon.
Keep an eye out for this transaction to conclude sooner rather than later.
