Courtland Sutton, a wide receiver with the Denver Broncos, has been skipping the team’s offseason training in search of a restructured contract.
According to OverTheCap.com, Sutton’s base salary for this season will be $13 million, with $2 million guaranteed. Next year, Sutton’s base compensation will rise to $13.5 million, but none of it is guaranteed.
The 28-year-old receiver seeks a raise as his contract enters its final two years.
“He’d like to see that get up, maybe in the $15-$16 million range,” ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler said earlier this month. “We’ll see if they can find a sweet spot.”
The Broncos took a $53 million “dead money” cap hit when they fired quarterback Russell Wilson in March, so it’s understandable that the franchise has been hesitant to offer Sutton a raise. Denver presently has approximately $8.7 million in open contract space, but significant extensions for centre Quinn Meinerz and cornerback Pat Surtain are on the way.
Sutton’s absence from workouts and light sessions has been entirely voluntary, and the team has played down his absence. If Sutton skips obligatory minicamp next month (June 11-13), he could face fines of up to $101,716.
Eventually, one side will concede. Either the Broncos agree to revise his contract, or Sutton will report to practice. The second week of planned team activities is scheduled to begin later today.
