The New Orleans Saints have one of the league’s strongest linebacker rooms, and the abundance of quality at the position suggests that they may cut second-year pro D’Marco Jackson. The Appalachian State graduate, a fifth-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, missed his rookie season due to injuries but returned to full health in 2023. The linebacker appeared in all 17 games and finished with 12 tackles and a fumble recovery that was recovered for a touchdown.
D’Marco Jackson did not light the world on fire, and his lacklustre performance could cost him his job after only one season on the active roster. Bleacher Report recently published a report detailing prospective roster cuts, and Jackson’s name appeared on the Saints’ list.
Saints Could Release Linebacker D’Marco Jackson
D’Marco Jackson is a wise choice, given New Orleans has a lot of linebacker skill on its roster. The team already had Demario Davis and former first-round pick Pete Werner under contract, and Willie Gay signed a large contract in free agency. With only so many roster spaces available, Jackson will most likely be the odd man out.
D’Marco Jackson, a fifth-round choice with little and mediocre video, may have reached the end of his career. However, many teams require linebackers, therefore he may join one of these organizations.
Potential landing spots include Atlanta Falcons.
Now that Kirk Cousins has replaced Desmond Ridder, the Atlanta Falcons have the offensive firepower to make the playoffs. What they lack is the defence to support a long playoff run. D’Maro Jackson may not be talented enough to start, but he can provide much-needed depth to this unit.
Baltimore Ravens
The Baltimore Ravens lost numerous important starters in free agency, including former first-round pick Patrick Queen. Roqaun Smith is the star of the show, and third-round pick Trenton Simpson demonstrated potential as a rookie, but Baltimore could use additional bodies at the position. Given that they did not draft an off-ball linebacker in the NFL Draft, D’Marco Jackson could contend for one of the last 53-man roster spots.
Los Angeles Chargers
Patrick Willis and Navarro Bowman were two of Jim Harbaugh’s 49ers’ most dependable linebackers. Harbaugh constructed his elite defence around these two, but he lacks the skill to recreate that success with the Los Angeles Chargers. D’Marco Jackson is clearly not as excellent as those two greats, but he can provide some challenge to one of the league’s weakest depth charts.
Carolina Panthers
The Carolina Panthers could use all the youthful talent they can get their hands on. Frankie Luvu went for greater pastures, and while Josey Jewell is a capable starter, they may benefit from a growth player like D’Marco Jackson. After facing the Saints twice last year, perhaps some holdovers from the previous staff found something appealing in the Appalachian State product.
