Could the New York Yankees and Mets make a surprise trade before the MLB trade deadline of July 30? A major MLB insider recently broached the notion of bringing back a former Pinstripes player for the season’s stretch run.
Heading into today’s MLB games, the Mets and Yankees’ seasons are on quite different paths. The Bronx Bombers lead the American League East and have the third-best overall record in the current MLB standings. Unfortunately, the Amazins are toward the bottom of the National League East and overall rankings.
The 2024 MLB trade deadline is only a few months away, but there has already been much conjecture about what both teams would do in July. Unsurprisingly, the Mets are likely to sell if they are unable to turn things around, but the Yankees will hunt for the finishing elements of a World Series-winning recipe. According to one major league insider, the two competing teams could collaborate before July 30.
“[Luis] Severino signed a one-year, $13 million deal in the hope of having a bounce-back season before reentering the free agent market — and anyway, if the Mets conduct business as they did last summer with Max Scherzer, they might prefer to pay off the player’s salary in return for a better prospect package,” Buster Olney of ESPN wrote on Tuesday. “And having spent his entire career in New York, he’s got big-market and playoff experience, which would make him a possible fit for a wider range of teams — including the New York Yankees, if they incur some injuries.”
Luis Severino numbers for 2024: 2-2 record, 3.22 ERA, 1.159 WHIP, 50 strikeouts, 26 walks, 58.2 innings pitched.
After compiling a 6.55 ERA in 19 appearances during a career-worst season with the Yankees in 2023, Severino has had a considerably better year with the Mets in 2024. He’s been one of their few bright lights this season, lowering his ERA by half and should have a better record than 2-2. However, New York’s poor hitting and ninth-inning struggles have cost him.
The Yankees’ staff has been good this season, and Gerrit Cole, who has missed the entire season, is slated to return in the coming weeks. They’d need a couple of starting injuries before seriously considering a Severino trade, but it’d be an intriguing option to bring back the man they helped develop into a two-time All-Star.
