Jake Haener is eager to compete with Spencer Rattler.
“Spencer is great, but at the end of the day I don’t care who they draft,” Haener stated. “Every year, they’ll draft somebody to attempt to replace me; it’s pretty much the same story for me. I’ve always been the underdog; I just have to prove them wrong. If that’s you folks, terrific.”

Of course, Haener wasn’t going to give up just because a new guy joined him in the quarterback’s room. He’s always had a competitive spirit, and he has even more to show after a disappointing 2023.

Haener was suspended for six regular-season games after getting traction in the preseason against Jameis Winston.

With that behind him, he must return to fend off the novice Rattler. So far in OTAs, Haener has been the most precise and impressive quarterback during sessions. Reports from camp have been positive, and Derek Carr has always admired Haener’s talent.

The fun between the backup alternatives will also pick up during the preseason. Both quarterbacks will get plenty of practice against live action opponents. Expect Carr to get few reps, especially later in the preseason.

Overall, it’s good to see Haener’s honesty.
He enjoys the competition but is nonetheless motivated to beat Rattler. You wouldn’t want any other mindset from the young quarterback. You’d rather he showed that passion than employ “coach speak” positivism when questioned about the struggle.
