Super Bowl 50 champion Brandon McManus was dismissed by the Washington Commanders on Sunday, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. This follows accusations that McManus misbehaved during a fight during the Jaguars’ 2023 trip to London, which led to the former Bronco kicker being implicated in a lawsuit filed in May.
McManus spent the 2023 season with the Jacksonville Jaguars, following his time in Denver. McManus made his debut in Denver in 2014 as a rookie out of Temple and will remain there until the 2022 season. McManus is the Broncos’ second-highest scorer of all time, and his 223 field goals rank second in the team’s history.
McManus had a successful 2023 season, converting on 30 of 37 field goals and missing no extra points. His 81.1% field goal percentage was up from 77% with the Broncos in 2022, and his 100% PAT conversion rate was his best since his most recent 100% conversion season in 2018.
McManus’ stay in Jacksonville lasted only one year, as the kicker did not re-sign with the Jaguars and instead signed a one-year contract with the Commanders. McManus was released before his contract with the Commanders began, and he will now be a free agent. However, McManus is now a 32-year-old who will turn 33 before the season begins, on the slide in performance, and carrying a lot of off-the-field baggage.
With most teams set at the kicking position heading into the 2024 season, and given how late it is in the off-season to re-enter the free market, it is reasonable to wonder if we have seen the last of McManus in the NFL. While it is evident that he will not be a Commander this season, the rest of the NFL may follow suit in the near future.
