This offseason, the Pittsburgh Steelers moved all of their chips into the middle of the table at quarterback, signing veteran Russell Wilson and dealing for Justin Fields, and they could make a big move at wide receiver to add a weapon.
While it’s unclear how head coach Mike Tomlin and the Steelers will use their two new quarterbacks this autumn, they have the means to add a key weapon to their arsenal before the 2024 season begins.
As CeeDee Lamb’s contract negotiations with the Dallas Cowboys have stagnated this offseason, the Pittsburgh Steelers could be the perfect fit to make a bold move for the playmaking wide receiver with 32 career touchdowns.
Could the Pittsburgh Steelers trade for Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb?
It remains to be seen whether the Cowboys will trade Lamb, probably the most exciting offensive player on the club, but the Steelers have the assets to make a tempting offer that would make the decision difficult.
Brad Gagnon of Bleacher Report compiled a list of “cannot refuse” blockbuster trade options the Cowboys could consider for Lamb, including the Steelers sending a second-round pick and wide receiver George Pickens to Dallas in return for Lamb.
“Because Pickens is coming off a 1,000-yard sophomore season,” Gagnon writes in B/R. “This would be closer to a player-for-player transaction, with Dallas saving money and gaining draft capital while Pittsburgh does everything it can to get this right.
“This move makes quite a lot of sense considering the Steelers are in better cap shape than the Cowboys.”
As Gagnon argues, the fact that Pickens is younger than Lamb — and more importantly, still on his much more modest rookie contract — may make this offer impossible to turn down.
Trading Lamb to the Steelers would move the great wide receiver out of the NFC, while Pickens would be a developing but proven receiver to build around.
Pickens has 115 receptions for 1,941 yards and nine touchdowns in his first two seasons, despite extremely variable quarterback play. If the Cowboys believe Pickens has great upside from here, with Dak Prescott at quarterback, this may be a spectacular trade proposition to watch.
