The Minnesota Vikings have completed their 2024 required minicamp as they continue to push through organized team activities this offseason. Superstar wide receiver Justin Jefferson was even at TCO Performance Centre this week, after the Vikings finally signed him to the record-breaking contract extension for which we had been waiting nearly two offseasons.

With Jefferson paid, extended, and happy, all eyes are on the franchise’s new future. Not that J.J., but the other J.J. Fans and media members are now curious about first-round rookie quarterback J.J McCarthy’s performance thus far this summer.

It has already been suggested that the Vikings are defending McCarthy and “trying to keep the temperature down as much as they can” in terms of fan expectations for him. It may not be just dampening expectations, though, as one Minnesota Vikings beat writer provided a more detailed report on McCarthy’s performance so far this offseason.

According to Kevin Seifert (ESPN), it has been tough to make a fair appraisal of McCarthy this offseason because head coach Kevin O’Connell prioritizes mental growth over physical endurance at this point in the team’s offseason training. Despite O’Connell’s limits, Seifert has made a few observations regarding McCarthy thus far this summer.

Seifert observes the stark contrast between McCarthy and former Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins in previous practices, highlighting McCarthy’s inconsistency in accuracy with his rocket right arm. So far this offseason, Seifert has described McCarthy in one word: “rookie”.
