The Pittsburgh Steelers are still looking for a wide receiver, so anyone who appears intriguing will be examined. This is no different for free agents, and while a trade appears to be the most likely outcome, Pittsburgh has made early contact with a few free agents. Bleacher Report ranked the Steelers as one of the best landing locations for former New Orleans Saints great receiver Michael Thomas.
Steelers Now reported earlier this month that the organization has made first contact with Michael Thomas. However, the nature and scope of the negotiations were unknown. It might be a check-in to see where he is, and Thomas could be the Steelers’ backup plan later in the summer.
Prior to a series of injuries, Thomas was one of the top wide receivers in the NFL. However, a major ankle injury robbed him several seasons of his career and had multiple surgery. Last season, he returned but sustained additional ailments that kept him out for some time. In other words, Thomas has a lot of pedigree as a previous All-Pro, but his longevity and production at this point in his career are questionable.
The Steelers appear to be lured to big names on the trade market, such as Courtland Sutton and Brandon Aiyuk. However, neither player is guaranteed to be relocated at this point in the year. If they were to make a deal, it would most likely take place before or during the NFL Draft. Pittsburgh picked Roman Wilson and signed Van Jefferson, Quez Watkins, and Scotty Miller to help fill out the receiving room, but they remain interested in other guys on the outside.
Thomas has a great upside, but at this point in his career, the Steelers have little confidence that he will slot in as the real WR2. However, if a trade cannot be completed, Thomas may be worth adding.
