Caitlin Clark has been kept off the United States women’s basketball Olympic team, and for a silly reason.
According to a story released late Friday night, Clark will not be among the Olympic team’s 12 members.
Christine Brennan of USA Today reported on Saturday that Clark was kept out in part because USA Basketball was concerned about blowback from Clark’s millions of supporters if the Indiana Fever guard saw minimal action during the Olympics. In other words, Clark is too popular for USA Basketball, and they can’t figure out how to handle her, so they’re leaving her out completely.
Brennan noted in her essay how little media coverage women’s basketball receives at the Olympics, and how Clark’s presence on the squad might have changed that.
This way of thinking is the embodiment of “cut off your nose to spite your face.”
Women’s basketball players have been demanding higher compensation and better travel arrangements (such as charter flights). They now have a game-changing talent in the league, but they abuse her on the court before declining to display her on a worldwide platform.
It makes you question what they are doing.
