The Phillies have released Beau Burrows from his minor league contract, according to MLB.com’s transaction record. The former first-round pick signed with the Phillies at the end of spring training.
The Tigers selected Burrows with the 22nd choice in the 2015 draft. Earlier in his professional career, the Texas native was rated as a top 100 talent. When he reached Triple-A, his results began to level out. Burrows pitched in the majors for the Tigers and Twins from 2020 to 2021, allowing eight runs in 8 1/3 innings across six bullpen appearances.
Burrows has since moved about the lesser leagues, mostly at the upper levels. He will be with the Dodgers in 2022 after spending a year in the Braves’ organization. Burrows spent time with the Phillies at Double-A Reading and Triple-A Lehigh Valley, allowing 6.45 earned runs per nine over 22 1/3 innings.
He walked more than 20 percent of opposing batters. Burrows has a 6.10 ERA in 317 1/3 career innings at Triple-A. His camp will most likely look for another minor league opportunity, while it’s not impossible that he may go to independent ball to hone his command.
