Rob Thomson has underlined the significance of his players’ health throughout the season, beginning on day one.
Recently, the Phillies have suffered a slew of injuries at numerous positions. While the club takes the appropriate safeguards for each individual player, things appear to be progressing positively.
Prior to Wednesday’s game against the Red Sox, Topper delivered an update on many players.
Trea Turner
The Phillies’ shortstop, who hasn’t played since May 3 due to a hamstring ailment, increased his activities after the club arrived at Fenway on Tuesday.
“[Yesterday] was good and then today we ran the bases,” Thomson stated. “I went out there for it. Everything went well. Now, we’ll need to raise the intensity. Do some more stuff, like stops and starts, simulated scoring from first, Dusty [Wathan] holding him up, and so on. We’ll do it in the next few days.
Thomson highlighted Turner’s “eighty-five percent” effort when running on Wednesday. Turner might be activated before the road trip ends in Baltimore, but Thomson believes it will happen during the homestand next week.
“If it’s sooner than that, that’s great,” he replied. “But I would say, to be realistic, it’s going to be on the homestand.”
Brandon Marsh
Marsh has not been with the club since their departure for London on June 5. He spent time recuperating at Citizens Bank Park before heading to Lehigh Valley on Saturday to resume baseball activities for the weekend. He has since joined Reading, as the IronPigs are also on the road.
As for his progress?
“Ran the bases today, he’ll run the bases again tomorrow,” Thomson stated. “Then, we’ll figure out whether he’s going to play in games down there.”
The outfielder has been on the 10-day disabled list since June 3.
J. T. Realmuto
Realmuto underwent right knee meniscectomy surgery earlier today after going on the 10-day disabled list on Tuesday.
“Surgery went well, nothing new,” Thomson added. “It was precisely as we expected. He’ll be in [Citizens Bank Park] tomorrow working on his rehab, and then we’ll decide if he’ll join us in Baltimore.”
The team believes his return “should be about a month.”
Meanwhile, the Phillies want to have Garrett Stubbs and Rafael Marchán share the job. Marchán is scheduled to make his first start of the season Wednesday in Boston.
