Courtland Sutton, a Denver Broncos wide receiver, returned to the practice field for mandatory minicamp in June, putting an end to his unofficial contract stalemate. Sutton had been practicing in Florida during the rest of the Denver Broncos’ optional OTAs, but the team never expressed worry about his extended absence.
Sutton has two years left on his contract and has made it clearly apparent in media reports that he wants a raise from the organization. Sutton has only $2 million in guaranteed income left over the next two years, and with the receiver market heating up, he wants a raise while he is still under 30.
Understandable.
On his first day back with the team, Sutton met with a group of reporters and made some unexpectedly candid disclosures about the status of his current contract negotiations.
Broncos WR Courtland Sutton is very honest about the contract issue.
“My team and I have communicated with the individuals upstairs who oversee all of that stuff. We’ve been going back and forth trying to figure out the best way to establish a middle ground in this scenario. We’re at a standstill, but I’m confident that the correct thing will be done.”
So, should we term this more of a “hold-in” for Sutton? He did his part by coming there, even though he would have faced fines from the team for any unexcused absences. But by coming up in the first place, Sutton demonstrates that he prioritizes the team. He may continue to make life difficult for the Broncos, especially with a rookie quarterback, by refusing to play and taking fines.
That obviously did not happen, and Sutton is currently attending mandatory minicamp. And based on what he stated in his media scrum, it appears like he and the Broncos have reached a mutual understanding on the next contractual steps to be taken.
Sutton also made it very obvious that he wants to be around for the team’s possible resurgence:
“I hope so. I hope I’m part of the broader picture. That is the game plan, according to what I have heard. I’ve also heard some other stuff. We’ll see what happens. I hope I can contribute to the game plan. I also don’t think it will be a soft reset. I’m praying, working, and hoping to convince guys that this will not be a three-year process. “We want to win now.”
Courtland Sutton improves this team’s performance. With Bo Nix at the helm, we may see the finest version of his game to yet. Hopefully, he and the Broncos can reach an agreement that will satisfy both parties moving forward.
