When speaking with the media on Thursday, New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr had nothing but positive things to say about Alvin Kamara, who skipped minicamp earlier this week due to a desire for a new deal. Kamara had been in attendance, and everything was well until he unexpectedly left. His agent confirmed that this was contract-related.
Carr commended his running back during his press conference, stating that he has played with many good running backs, but Kamara is unique. He related a tale about how he passed the ball off to Kamara once and didn’t believe he’d be able to accomplish anything with the narrow opening the offensive line had created for him, but “God blessed him with those first three steps.” They’re just different from everyone else.”
Derek Carr appreciates Alvin Kamara despite his contract holdout.
Carr certainly wants his running back to stick around. He understands that the Saints offence performs better when Kamara takes the handoffs and attempts a huge run. But can the Saints afford to offer Kamara everything he wants?
The Saints will have to make a decision on Kamara. Do they give him the contract he wants, or should they consider trading him and moving on with their current running backs?
Jamaal Williams and Kendre Miller are behind Kamara on the depth chart, and neither of them had a breakout season last year. There is no doubt about Kamara’s talent, and Carr understands that having him on the field makes this club better.
It may not be up to Carr to decide whether the running back is compensated. Due to the wear and stress on running backs’ bodies, the NFL has shifted away from paying them high salaries. Kamara is entering his 29th season, which is considered elderly for NFL running backs. Nonetheless, he rushed for nearly 700 yards in 13 starts last year and scored five touchdowns. Kamara demonstrated that he had much left in the tank.
We know Derek Carr’s feelings regarding Alvin Kamara. What will the New Orleans Saints choose to do?
