Cam Heyward, an All-Pro defensive tackle, spoke this week as if he knew his days with the Pittsburgh Steelers were numbered.
Heyward and the Steelers have yet to agree on a contract extension. Heyward is under contract for $22.4 million this season, the final year of a four-year, $65.6 million contract inked in 2020.
The six-time Pro Bowler skipped the first two weeks of OTAs in protest of the lack of progress toward a new contract.
Heyward, who returned for the final week of OTAs amid contract negotiations, spoke with reporters after a team practice on Thursday. The 35-year-old admitted to his wife Allie that he has considered playing for another team. That other team may be the Cleveland Browns, who are in the same division as the Steelers.
“I talked to my wife, and we know the reality; she said it would be fun to play somewhere else. If that is what needs to be done, so be it,” Heyward told Mark Kobaly of The Athletic.
“I still have family in Cleveland.” “My wife is from Cleveland,” Heyward explained. “We’ll see. I’m not trying to think about all that right now.”
Heyward has spent his whole 13-year career with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Pittsburgh chose Heyward in the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft. Heyward appeared in the Pro Bowl every season from 2017 to 2022. During that time, he was also named to three All-Pro first teams.
