INJURY UPDATE: Yankees Manager Latest On Anthony Rizzo Injury Update After Undergoing More Test On Wrist Injury After Collision At First Base

Anthony Rizzo, the New York Yankees’ first baseman, left Sunday’s loss to the Boston Red Sox early due to an awkward collision while jogging the bases.

Rizzo hit a ground ball in the seventh inning of the 9-3 loss and raced to first base. As he approached the bag, he collided with Red Sox reliever Brennan Bernardino and landed awkwardly on his right wrist, which he quickly clutched as he rolled into the grass.

Rizzo was safe because Bernardino dropped the toss just before contact, but he was quickly removed from the game. He was replaced by pinch runner Oswaldo Cabrera.

Rizzo is scheduled to undergo further testing on Monday. It is unclear how serious his injury is or how long he will be out.

“We’ll see,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone replied. “The initial imaging was negative, but he’s experiencing discomfort in several areas of his lower arm. Obviously, he’ll have a bunch of testing tomorrow to see what we’re dealing with.
Rizzo, 34, has a.223 batting average, eight home runs, and 28 RBIs this season, his third full season with the Yankees. The injury he experienced Sunday was similar to one he suffered last year when he collided with Fernando Tatis Jr. at first base. As a result of post-concussion syndrome, his season was cut short.

Although the Yankees trailed by only one run when Rizzo exited, the Red Sox rallied for a six-run victory at Fenway Park, owing in large part to Connor Wong’s two-run triple in the bottom of the eighth. Boston stole an astonishing nine bases in the triumph, the most in the league in a single game this season and the most allowed by the Yankees since 1915.

The Yankees, who have lost three of their last four, are 50-24 and lead the AL East. They’ll open a three-game series against the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday.
