Marshon Lattimore’s New Orleans Saints haven’t received much national attention recently. OTAs and mandatory minicamp have already taken place, but the team’s top cornerback is making headlines.
Lattimore clarified a number of things during a chat with reporters, according to Mike Triplett of New Orleans Football.
“I’m definitely number one. I am number one. I want to prove it. I felt like I started last year with an All-Pro season. I’m just ready to be better than I was before. And I’m working towards it. “I’m just ready,” he stated.
The Saints have experienced a surge of defensive talent. However, according to ESPN’s depth chart, the flood of talent has not replaced Lattimore at the top of the pecking order. However, the cornerback’s deal has a greater opportunity for adjustment.
According to Spotrac, Lattimore’s contract has terms that essentially protect him from an early cut in 2024. However, in 2025, the Saints will have a financial incentive to move on from their cornerback.
Sensing this, Lattimore has begun a year in which his primary task will be to persuade the general manager to retain him on.

If Lattimore performs admirably, the Saints may consider signing him to a multi-year contract extension. This resets the countdown timer. Lattimore is currently signed through 2026. However, obtaining a significant contract extension thus late into Lattimore’s 20s is a rare occurrence.

If Lattimore were to enter free agency tomorrow, he may expect a few teams to bid on him. However, in two or three years, the outcome will be determined by a coin flip. Then, a few years later, Lattimore could be out of options.
As a result, negotiating an extension now while looking and playing at a starting level is his only choice in what is sure to be a losing battle with Father Time.
Furthermore, Marshon Lattimore is approaching the age when it makes more sense to pursue Super Bowls over money. Unless he wants to retire with the New Orleans Saints, he might choose to pursue a championship elsewhere.
