Jasson Dominguez, New York Yankees’ top outfield prospect, recently suffered a frustrating setback. Dominguez, who had recently recovered from Tommy John surgery, was withdrawn from a game over the weekend due to a troubling occurrence during a check swing that caused him to feel a pull in his left side. The team sent him for more imaging to establish the severity.
The Yankees will allow Dominguez plenty of time to recover.
Following the incident, the Yankees revealed Dominguez had a “moderate” oblique strain. While this type of injury can have a substantial impact on a player’s ability to swing the bat, Dominguez’s prognosis indicates that he could return to play this season after a few weeks of recovery. The Yankees intend to give him plenty of time to recover completely in order to avoid aggravating the injury when he returns to play.
Dominguez has shown great promise in the minor leagues this season. In 23 games, including nine with Triple-A Scranton, he has a batting average of.389, an on-base percentage of.405, and a slugging percentage of.639. He has two home runs and three RBIs in 37 plate appearances, totaling 167 wRC+. His performance demonstrates not just a quick adjustment to high-level competition, but also considerable potential for future contributions to the Yankees.
Despite the Yankees’ current outfield strength, which includes Aaron Judge, Juan Soto, and Alex Verdugo, Dominguez’s role will grow in importance as the postseason approaches. If he can sustain his form upon his return, the team may promote him to the major league roster at an advantageous moment when service time is no longer an issue.
