The New York Yankees may be attempting to sign one of 2024’s most sought-after players.
In a Thursday story, Jon Heyman of the New York Post called left-handed pitcher Garrett Crochet the top trade candidate for the Chicago White Sox, who are 20-56. Heyman particularly claimed that the Yankees are one of the teams that value Crochet’s arm and potential.
Crochet, 25, began his career as a reliever but has switched to a full-time starter this season, with outstanding results. He has been one of the White Sox’s only bright spots, going 6-6 with a 3.25 ERA, 0.95 WHIP, and an AL-leading 124 strikeouts. Crochet also has two years of arbitration eligibility remaining after this season.
Though reigning AL Cy Young winner Gerrit Cole has recently returned from injury, the Yankees’ rotation could definitely be improved, particularly in terms of dynamic lefties. Nestor Cortes and Carlos Rodon have been quite consistent this season, although they miss significantly fewer bats than Crochet does. The MLB-best 51-26 Yankees appear to be stockpiling arms for the postseason, as they have also signed another lefty pitcher.
