Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s stance toward the New York Yankees can be summed up in three seasons.
2022: The Blue Jays finish 92-70, their best record since 2015, and enter the playoffs. Guerrero stated in an interview that he “would never sign with the [New York] Yankees, not even [when I’m] dead.”
2023: Toronto drops slightly but still makes the playoffs with an 89-73 record. Guerrero deems his dislike for the Yankees “a personal thing.”
2024: Guerrero, the face of a rapidly failing 35-43 squad, is suddenly eager to play for New York.
“I am not trying to retract what I said about the Yankees,” Guerrero told Virus Deportivo Monday. “But it’s a business. I got down and talked to my father and my family, and this is a business. And I promised never to discuss this matter again, yet many people have questioned me about it.”
Despite rumours of a trade, the three-time All-Star insisted on staying focused on his primary goal: winning with the Blue Jays.
“I’m a player and if a team picks me or if they do something, it’s because they need it, obviously, and I’ll be happy to help any team,” Guerrero told the media. “But right now, I’m just focused on helping my team try to get out of this bad streak.”
Toronto’s 2-8 record over the last ten games is the worst in baseball, and the team has lost its last seven.
