The Miami Heat are ready to make a significant move by keeping one of their top players on the roster going forward.
According to insider Shams Charania, the Heat and All-Star centre Bam Adebayo aim to sign a three-year deal extension totaling $166 million.
The move would retain the All-NBA defender in Miami until the 2028-2029 season.
This is a big thing.
Aside from six-time All-Star Jimmy Butler, Adebayo is the best player on the club.
The five-time All-NBA defender is regarded as one of the NBA’s top defensive players and rim defenders.
Adebayo, who is only 26 years old, is still in his peak and can help this squad return to title contention.
However, given Jimmy Butler’s age of 34, this squad should be under pressure to win right now.
If this squad wants to compete in the Eastern Conference, it may need to add another player.
They did trade for Terry Rozier, a former Charlotte Hornets point guard, in January, but it was not a game-changing move.
After being knocked out of the first round by the champion Celtics this year, they must recover.
Remember, they advanced to the NBA Finals as the eighth seed two seasons ago and as the sixth seed in 2019-20.
With Bam Adebayo in the fold for the future, Miami at least has a top centre for the next five years.
