Denny Hamlin and Kyle Larson have had several battles this season. For the most part, the JGR driver appears to have gotten away with his antics against his competitor; a similar incident occurred during the USA Today 301 race. Larson’s spotter, Tyler Monn, got riled up when he saw his driver fail to respond to Hamlin’s aggressive efforts.
However, the HMS star was not thrilled with his spotter’s advice on how to race, and he vented his fury by yelling, “Shut the f**k up.” While there have been concerns regarding Larson’s use of offensive language on his spotter, Kevin Harvick has now spoken out in support of the HMS driver. He argued that spotters are becoming overly involved in racing and should leave it to the drivers.
Kevin Harvick believes that spotters are stepping out of their shoes.
A spotter’s primary responsibility is to assist the race car driver in determining the optimal positions and keeping them informed of the entire field. This is another critical aspect of racing, but Tyler Monn topped it off by coaching Larson on how to race against his rival: “He runs you like that all the time. Do you know why? Because you allowed it to happen. Larson heard a call from his spotter, which was generally made by the crew chief. The next thing you know, he’s fully lost his cool, resulting in radio silence.
Kevin Harvick didn’t mince words when he reflected on the entire situation, criticizing spotters for making unneeded radio comments. He complimented Denny Hamlin and Larson and stated, “I understand where the spotter is coming from in that position, but I also believe that the spotter should keep his mouth shut and not say that. I believe he should stay in his lane. Many times, these spotters give themselves more flexibility than they should when it comes to what they say on the radio. Harvick mentioned this during the Happy Hour podcast.
