We’re still little over two months away from seeing the Minnesota Vikings face the New York Giants in the regular season opening on September 8. However, while general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah has spent the majority of the offseason addressing important Vikings needs, one area remains unresolved: the team’s No. 3 wide receiver position.
Sure, there are plenty of contenders on the roster, and we just looked at who the Vikings want to take the role, but what about guys from other teams? Or, in this situation, what about unsigned free agents eager to prove the rest of the NFL incorrect after being passed over for so long?
Free agency began in March, and here we are, in August, with numerous noteworthy individuals still hunting for work, including former Las Vegas Raiders Pro Bowl wideout Hunter Renfrow.
Renfrow has recently caught the attention of The Athletic’s Alec Lewis, who is pressing the Vikings to sign the 5-foot-10, 185-pound receiver.
“If O’Connell’s run game continues consistent over the last few years, Renfrow isn’t the required big body at WR3. But he can win one-on-one coverage and quickly learn the team’s choice-route principles from the slot. Minnesota may be better off strengthening defensive depth, but leaning more into its pass-first culture could lead to Renfrow.”
Lewis also mentioned a few other unsigned free agents the Vikings could approach, although none of them are as well-known as Renfrow.
Hunter Renfrow statistics (career): 269 receptions, 2,884 receiving yards, 17 touchdowns.
Renfrow, a former fifth-round pick, has already exceeded all expectations as an NFL pro, but he is only 28 years old, which means he may still have several years of peak performance left. The problem is that we haven’t seen Renfrow at his peak for the past two seasons.
Renfrow, however, was named to the Pro Bowl in 2021 after accumulating 1,038 yards and nine touchdowns on 103 receptions. This came after two consecutive receiving seasons of 600 yards or more. His early work resulted in a two-year, $32 million contract in 2022.
However, after Renfrow’s output dipped to just 330 and 255 yards over the previous two seasons, the Raiders released their former slot receiver from the roster. While it’s unclear how much he has left in the tank, Renfrow has demonstrated the ability to play at a high level.
The Vikings have nothing to lose by bringing Renfrow in for a workout to see what he’s still capable of, but given his age, there should be plenty of tread remaining on the tires.
