It is no secret that Gleyber Torres, the Yankees’ senior baseman, is having a terrible 2024 season. Torres, who was recently benched for a lacklustre performance, will return to the lineup on Friday against the Toronto Blue Jays.
However, his season numbers over 80 games—a batting average of only.215 with an OBP of.294 and a slugging percentage of.333—are less than great. With Giancarlo Stanton currently on the injured list, the Yankees desperately need their veterans, particularly Torres, to step up.
Potential trade scenarios: Jazz Chisholm Jr. on the radar
If Torres continues to struggle as the late July trade deadline approaches, General Manager Brian Cashman may investigate alternatives to replace him.
One probable target is Miami Marlins’ Jazz Chisholm Jr. Chisholm, who will be a free agency in 2027, is currently having a good season with a.260 batting average, 10 home runs, 37 RBIs, and a 111 wRC+. His explosive presence on the bases, highlighted by his 84th percentile sprint speed, might add much-needed athleticism to the Yankees’ lineup.
Chisholm’s Fit for the Yankees
Despite his aggressive attitude at the plate, which can be detrimental—as seen by his 34th percentile chase rate and 25th percentile whiff rate—Chisholm’s potential has yet to be realized. His ability to barrel the ball, rating in the 83rd percentile, demonstrates his latent potential. Furthermore, Chisholm’s versatility extends beyond the infield, as he can also play centerfield, giving the Yankees other strategic alternatives.
Potential Trade Packages and Prospects
The acquisition cost for a guy like Chisholm will be significant. According to Jim Bowden of The Athletic, a trade deal centred on Will Warren could be a starting point.
“For Chisholm, they’d be seeking a package centred around right-hander Will Warren and a power bat like Everson Pereira with centre fielder Jace Avina as the final piece.”
Warren, a 25-year-old pitcher, has a 6.53 ERA in 70.1 innings for Triple-A Scranton this season, indicating considerable regression from his past great performance. Everson Pereira, a 23-year-old outfielder rehabilitating from a UCL injury and slated for Tommy John surgery, and Jace Avina, a promising 21-year-old now playing at High-A Hudson Valley, are also included in the proposed deal.
Strategic Decisions for the Yankees
This trade might be a game changer for the Yankees, as it provides them with a player who can immediately impact the team in a variety of ways. Such a move would help to close some of the performance gaps created by Torres’ problems.
Furthermore, the Yankees may contemplate benching Torres or investigating trade alternatives to transfer him for pitching, letting another team to take a chance on his potential recovery and extension on a more favourable terms following a difficult season.
