With training camp less than a month away, trade activity between NFL organizations likely increase in the coming weeks.
After months of speculation that the Browns were looking for trade partners for cornerback Greg Newsome, Browns GM Andrew Berry put those rumours to rest – for now, at least – by picking up the fifth-year option on the athlete’s rookie contract.
Another Cleveland athlete could be traded after training camp begins in July, as the Browns have too many quarterbacks on their roster.
Fans should expect trade rumours to circulate around recently signed Tyler Huntley, who is the odd man out in the Browns’ quarterback room.
NFL teams typically roster two quarterbacks for game-day 53-man rosters, with the third serving as a scout team member unless an injury occurs.
Deshaun Watson and Jameis Winston are the Browns’ top two quarterback choices, and the team has little desire to deal either of them.
Huntley is listed as a potential trade target since second-year quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson is expected to remain at No. 3.
In addition to having a team-friendly contract, Thompson-Robinson’s history as a former draft pick normally holds weight in the current system, where Berry is looking for and developing new talent.
Thompson-Robinson, a fifth-round lottery pick in 2023, sustained a season-ending injury last year, and the 6-foot-2 athlete has been rehabbing it this offseason.
The second-year quarterback was limited in several OTA sessions this year, and training camp and preseason games will be Thompson-Robinson’s final chance to secure his place as the team’s third quarterback in 2024.
