Marcus Stroman, the New York Yankees’ starting pitcher, apologized for “losing my cool” and promised to “be better” after yelling at teammate Gleyber Torres during Friday night’s 16-5 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays.
The right-hander yelled at second baseman Torres after New York failed to turn a double play in the fifth inning, allowing a run.
“It was frustrating,” Stroman explained. “I felt like I delivered a strong pitch. That was a huge spot. I wanted it turned there, but we didn’t.
Stroman claimed he spoke with Torres thereafter to clear the air. The pitcher later stated on social media that “raw emotion and passion are part of the game.”
Aaron Boone, the Yankees manager, claimed Stroman’s outburst was not divisive.
“No issue with where Stro’s mind, heart and focus is,” Boone told reporters. “When you’re competing hard, it can spill over a little bit. There are no problems in the room with anything.”
Stroman was the first Yankee to leave the dugout following Torres’ two-run homer in the sixth inning.
“He’s always a guy who supports everybody,” said Torres, who was returning to the lineup after sitting out two games.
Torres finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs.
Stroman gave up three runs and five hits in 4⅓ innings. He was pursued after the Blue Jays scored twice in the fifth to break a one-all deadlock. But Toronto failed to capitalize on a bases-loaded, one-out situation, and New York took over from there.
The Yankees ended a season-worst four-game losing streak by hitting 18 and scoring a season-high number of runs.
