The First Team selection wraps off a very successful 24 hours for MacKinnon, who also won the Hart Trophy and Ted Lindsay Award as the media and player-voted MVPs, respectively. It’s his third All-Star selection, however his previous two were all Second Team honours in 2018 and 2020. This season, the 28-year-old pivot led the Avs in scoring with 51 goals and 140 points, as well as 405 shots on goal, a league high.
Notably, the voting ledger (published in the league’s announcement) shows Kucherov was the unanimous first-team selection at right wing. It’s the first time since 2002 that the Flames’ Jarome Iginla was the overall pick after winning the Richard and Art Ross trophies. Kucherov, like Iginla, won this year’s Art Ross Trophy after scoring 144 points in 81 games. He equaled McDavid for the league lead with 100 assists, becoming the first winger in NHL history to reach that mark.
Both teams are without Maple Leafs superstar Auston Matthews, who has 69 goals this season, the most since Mario Lemieux in 1995-96. He also missed short of being a Hart Trophy finalist, after Kucherov, MacKinnon, and McDavid. He finished third in All-Star voting among centres, with nine First Team and 55 Second Team votes out of 187 ballots. Sidney Crosby of the Penguins was the only other centre to be considered, appearing on only four ballots.
