Tanner Scott, a left-handed pitcher, is acquired by the Yankees.
Marlins acquire shortstop Oswald Peraza and utility player Oswaldo Cabrera.
“The Marlins should accept this offer because I don’t think they’ll do much better elsewhere. Bowden stated that Peraza would become the Marlins’ starter shortstop and Cabrera would serve as their super-utility player. “Both of them are blocked by better Yankees players, so they are expendable.” Despite his lack of success in the Bronx, Peraza still has great potential.
What Scott Could Add to the Yankees’ Bullpen
Thus far in 2024, New York’s bullpen has been largely mediocre. According to FanGraphs, the team’s aggregate 3.73 ERA ranks 14th in baseball, while their 1.4 fWAR ranks 17th. Clay Holmes, a closer, had a 2.65 ERA through 34 innings in his final year before free agency. However, adding another high-leverage reliever with late-inning expertise for the stretch run is always a good idea.
That’s exactly what Scott could offer the Bombers if he was acquired in a trade. Since joining the Marlins in 2022, his performance has steadily increased with each season. He had a 4.31 ERA and 1.61 WHIP in 2022, then a 2.31 ERA and 0.99 WHIP in 2023. Through 35 innings in 2024, his ERA is 1.54, with a WHIP of 1.17.
The 29-year-old left-handed hurler would also be reasonably priced in terms of pay. Scott is making $5.7 million this season, according to Spotrac. He will also enter the free agent market in November. Given that team owner Hal Steinbrenner may be hesitant to take on a lot of salary to enhance the roster, this could be a good fit for the Yankees.
Many teams are interested in Scott.
On May 4, the Miami Marlins sent infielder Luis Arraez to the San Diego Padres, indicating that they would be sellers at the trade deadline. With a 30-53 record into June 30 games, it’s unlikely that the club’s stance has changed significantly.
Miami appears to be a motivated seller, with an appealing pitcher in Scott available for teams to bid on. It is unsurprising that the reliever market is expected to be competitive. In a June 27 report, Jon Heyman of the New York Post linked the southpaw to the Orioles, Philadelphia Phillies, and Los Angeles Dodgers, as well as New York. Heyman further stated that “many others” are likely to be interested in his services.
If Scott is at the top of the Yankees’ trade deadline wishlist, they will have to deal with a slew of other prospective suitors while attempting to make a deal happen.
