The Yankees and Bellinger, 28, were linked to trade rumours last season, according to The Athletic’s Will Sammon, Katie Woo, and Patrick Mooney.
As of July 2, the Cubs had not announced whether they will be sellers at the July 30 trade deadline.
Cody Bellinger Would Bring A Big Bat to the Bronx.
Bellinger inked a three-year, $80 million contract with the Cubs prior to the season. The contract contains opt-outs after the first two seasons. Bellinger won the National League MVP award in 2019 for the Los Angeles Dodgers. After three disappointing seasons, he rebounded by signing a one-year contract with the Cubs in 2023.
Bellinger is hitting.267/.327/.416 this season, with 9 home runs and 34 RBIs through July 1. Bellinger would not replace Aaron Judge or Juan Soto, but he could be an upgrade over Alex Verdugo in the outfield. Bellinger, who also plays first base, can provide versatility that makes him easy to slot into the order.
Bellinger has made 267 career starts at first base, a position the Yankees desperately need after Anthony Rizzo injured his right forearm in June. He might also be the DH. With Giancarlo Stanton and Rizzo out until at least late July and mid-August, Bellinger could easily become an everyday player.
He would also give the Yankees a left-handed option at the plate. Bellinger’s accomplishments include two Silver Sluggers, a Gold Glove, two All-Star selections, and a World Series title.
The Yankees’ Interest in Bellinger
“With the Cubs struggling to gain traction in the playoff race, teams like the New York Yankees and Texas Rangers have recently had a noticeable scouting presence around the club, a league source said,” reported The Athletic’s editorial board on June 28. “If the trend continues for the Cubs, Bellinger’s name will likely become a much-discussed name again near the deadline, as it was last season.”
Bellinger’s deal makes him a challenging trade target. With the opt-outs, he might be either a rental or a significant financial commitment until 2026. The Yankees face a decision on Soto’s contract. They may be unwilling to make a financial commitment to Bellinger if it means not being able to afford Soto.
The Cubs are seven games below.500 and 11 games behind the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Central.
“The Cubs were not meant to sell at the trade deadline. Their front staff has been making adjustments throughout the squad, attempting to gradually improve a team with 19 one-run losses, the most in the majors. But opponents must be prepared in case things worsen and the Cubs alter course,” said The Athletic’s staff.
