Minnesota Twins star Royce Lewis had to leave Tuesday night’s game against the Detroit Tigers due to stiffness in his left groin. The injury occurred during the sixth inning, when Lewis hit a two-run double. He was jogging at half-speed, at best, due to the injury’s immediate impact on his movement.
After the game, Lewis revealed that he was going to imaging to determine the seriousness of his injuries. He also expressed doubt that he would be able to avoid time on the injured list.
“Probably not very optimistic, to be honest with you,” Lewis told reporters on Tuesday regarding his odds of avoiding the IL. “I’m praying, but there’s always bad news. So, we’ll see.
Lewis, 25, is arguably the sport’s most snakebitten player. He’s been a superstar-caliber performance throughout his career, but injuries have prevented him from playing in even 100 major league games since being taken first overall in 2017. In 24 games this season, he had a.292/.354/.685 batting line with 10 home runs and five extra-base hits.
Lewis was sidelined for two months earlier this season after suffering a partly torn quadriceps on Opening Day. He has already suffered two torn ACLs in the same leg.
The Twins begin Wednesday with a 48-37 record, second in the American League Central. The Twins trail the surprise Cleveland Guardians by six games, but they presently retain the second American League wild card berth. The Minnesota Twins lead the Kansas City Royals by two games and the Boston Red Sox by two and a half games.
