The Leafs must find a way to get things moving in the postseason.
The club has taken part in the spring dance for the past eight years… However, they have only made it past the first round once.
And that has to change.
To make things work, some believe Brad Treliving should trade Mitch Marner.
The forward was chastised for his postseason performance last season because he wasn’t always present on the ice.
But Brian Burke believes otherwise.
Burke, a former GM in Toronto, argues on the Leafs Nation podcast that the natural guy to deal is not Mitch Marner. But William Nylander:
Brian Burke discusses that Mitch Marner is crucial in the Toronto lineup because he is effective on the power play.
Marner, unlike Nylander, is versatile. That’s why the former general manager would deal the Swede for Marner.
However, you have to wonder if Brad Treliving truly wants to trade Nylander after providing him an eight-year contract (starting July 1) worth $92 million.
It would be unique to see the Leafs deal Nylander before he has played a single game on his new contract… However, in the NHL, no one is immune to surprises.
There are no easy cures in Queen City.
Brad Treliving has a decision to make, and he has a few possibilities if Auston Matthews is untouchable.
Trade Marner. Trade Nylander.
Trade Tavares (even if his contract limits his value).
Keep the present group and try one more time to see if it works.
All of this will be something to keep an eye on in the coming weeks, and even months.
But one thing is certain: if Treliving does not take action, there will be hell to pay in Toronto.
And given how things have gone in the playoffs over the last eight years, that’s understandable.
Overtime: A successful debut for several young players.
