Jose Altuve, the Houston Astros’ second baseman, was hit by a pitch and carried off the field early in his team’s Friday game against the Minnesota Twins at Target Field in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
With the Astros up 7-5, Altuve led off the eighth inning against Twins reliever Josh Winder. The former American League MVP collapsed after being hit by a 94-mph sinker to the left hand.
When Altuve was able to stand up, he immediately asked for medical aid. The eight-time All-Star was removed from the game and replaced by pinch runner Mauricio Dubon.
The Astros followed Altuve’s hit by pitch with three straight singles. Houston added three runs in the eighth inning to extend its advantage to 10-5.
Altuve was 2-for-4 with an RBI before departing the game.
Altuve, in his 14th season, is poised for another successful season in 2024. He entered Friday’s game with a.308 batting average, 13 home runs, 39 RBI, and 13 stolen bases.
