GOOD NEWS: Saint Have Reportedly Hijack Chiefs To Sign All-Pro CB in Free Agency- Deal To be Completed in Few Hours Time

Patrick Peterson is about to begin his 14th season in the NFL, but his next team remains uncertain because he is still a free agent. On his podcast, All Things Covered, Peterson stated that he will “definitely be ready” to begin the season.

David Latham, NFL insider and managing editor of Last Word On Sports, believes the New Orleans Saints or Kansas City Chiefs are Peterson’s most likely next destinations. Where he ends up in the country is one thing, but where he ends up on the field is another. He should play safety or cornerback (his preferred position). Latham believes the latter is more plausible (via LWOS):
While Peterson played nearly solely as a cornerback until his tenure with the Pittsburgh Steelers last season, that may need to alter if he wants to play in 2024.

Which team would be a better fit for Peterson?

The Saints could use Peterson at safety, whereas the Chiefs could allow him to play cornerback.
The better match depends on who you ask: the team or Peterson. LWOS stated that Peterson wants to play cornerback, which makes more sense for the Chiefs than the Saints. Kansas City exchanged. This offseason, L’Jarius Sneed will leave a gap opposite Trent McDuffie:

Regarding the cornerback position, Kansas City believes Joshua Williams and Jaylen Watson can start opposite McDuffie. However, both players are inexperienced, and it would be beneficial to add a free agent veteran such as Patrick Peterson. The cornerback is no longer the player he once was, but he can give some much-needed backup if the two young players aren’t up to the extra duty.

If Peterson wants to play cornerback again and has only these two options, the Chiefs make perfect sense. He might return to his preferred position for the defending Super Bowl champions, who were second in points allowed last season. Peterson would have a legitimate shot at winning his first ring while playing on one of the NFL’s greatest defences.

Perhaps Peterson prefers the Chiefs, but the Saints might be a better fit. Peterson will turn 34 on July 11, and he has already exhibited indications of decline in recent years. In New Orleans, he might pair with Tyrann Mathieu to strengthen the Saints’ secondary.

Tyrann Mathieu remains a reliable starter, but someone needs to step up opposite him. Roderic Teamer, who was just signed, is a mediocre journeyman, while Jordan Howden, a 2023 fifth-round pick, did not produce much in his limited rookie experience. Dennis Allen must guide this club to the playoffs if he wants to maintain his job, and acquiring a free agent like Patrick Peterson to shore up one of the roster’s biggest flaws may mean the difference in a weak NFC South.

After all, there’s a reason Peterson played largely safety in Pittsburgh last season. Cornerback requires significantly greater speed and athleticism than safety, both of which begin to deteriorate when a player approaches their mid-30s, as Peterson is now.
While it is not as glamorous a landing spot as Kansas City, Peterson would have a greater impact and be better positioned for success in a circumstance where his age would not be as noticeable. Peterson is one of the top cornerbacks in the twenty-first century, but he may need to be honest with himself when he signs with his new team of choice.

If worse comes to worst, he could call Mathieu, who has played for both the Chiefs and the Saints in the last three years, and ask him which franchise he preferred.
