Trea Turner blasted his sixth career grand slam, and Bryson Stott and Brandon Marsh also homered as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 10-1 on Tuesday night.
“I thought Trea’s grand slam gave us a comfortable lead,” said Philadelphia Phillies manager Rob Thomson.
Turner’s grand slam came during a six-run fourth inning, giving the Phillies ample cushion to play without pitcher Zack Wheeler, who left the game after five innings due to left low back pain.
Wheeler (10-4) became one of three Phillies pitchers to achieve 10 victories before the All-Star break, along Aaron Nola and Ranger Suárez, for the first time in franchise history. Thomson and Wheeler were confident that the pitcher would be ready for his next start against Oakland on Sunday.
“Just being cautious, and we’ll take it from there,” Wheeler explained.
Following a modest 5-4 record during Harper and Schwarber’s absences, which included dropping two of three games in Atlanta over the weekend, the Phillies showed their offensive prowess early against the Dodgers, who lead their NL division.
“It was another solid win against a top team,” Turner said. “Every game matters, and it’s important to gauge ourselves against strong opponents.”
The Phillies broke open the game with a six-run fourth inning off Dodgers starter Bobby Miller (1-2), raising his ERA from 6.12 to 8.07.
With a 4-0 lead, Turner, who signed a $300 million, 11-year contract with the Phillies before the 2023 season after departing the Dodgers, hit an 86-mph slider into the left field seats.
