The Dallas Mavericks are now tying up loose ends on their roster, with only one free space on the 15-man roster and two open two-way spots.
Dallas re-signed Brandon Williams Thursday night, filling one of their open two-way spots, and they remain a feared Western Conference contender after making three changes that improved the team’s makeup.
They began the offseason by trading for Quentin Grimes, and they later strengthened their roster even further by signing Naji Marshall and getting Klay Thompson via a sign-and-trade.

With Thompson’s signing, Dallas now has one of the greatest shooters of all time alongside Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, and he is excited to go to work. Thompson’s inaugural press conference on Tuesday was packed with smiles and excitement, and he delivered one five-word bombshell that demonstrates why the Mavericks hit gold in signing him.
“You still can’t leave me open,” Thompson remarked.
Although this appears to be a simple phrase, it is one of the most significant statements from this press conference that has electrified Mavs supporters. Thompson says this is a message to people concerned about his defence and overall influence, as his shooting was arguably the Mavericks’ biggest draw.
Dallas’ shooting was subpar throughout the NBA Finals, and they could have used someone like Thompson to come in and nail open shots. All of Dallas’ role players struggled to shoot the ball, and Thompson’s shooting addresses a significant issue that the Mavs were hoping to rectify this offseason.
Thompson is still confident in his shooting talents, and despite his little defensive regression in the years since his injuries, he will be a major asset for Dallas. He is ecstatic to be a Maverick, and his decision to join the Mavs over the Los Angeles Lakers should say volumes about the type of organization that Nico Harrison and company are building in Dallas.
Dallas is becoming a popular free agent destination, and Thompson’s signing here could spark a snowball effect of additional top players wanting to play for the Mavericks in the future.
