Mitch Marner, a Toronto Maple Leafs forward, will host his Marner Assist Foundation on July 12, and the winger will be making media appearances to promote it.
Only a few journalists were able to interview Marner, and according to David Alter of The Hockey News, no questions concerning the Maple Leafs or his future were permitted.
It’s noteworthy that Marner and his teammates agreed not to answer any questions about the Maple Leafs or his future. However, he has been the subject of trade rumours all summer, but no agreement has been reached.
Marner does have a full no-movement clause, as he enters the final year of his six-year, $65.4 million contract inked in 2019. With Marner approaching his final season, many fans expected him to be dealt this summer after the Maple Leafs were eliminated in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs by the Boston Bruins.
Marner scored 26 goals and 59 assists for 85 points in 69 games last season.
Maple Leafs fans criticize Marner for banning questions.
Fans chastised Marner after it was announced that he would not answer any questions about the Maple Leafs or his future.
Maple Leafs fans believed Marner should be able to discuss his future plans and if he would continue to play in Toronto.
“Typical Marner.” “Can’t take the pressure,” one fan wrote.
“What a clown. A Ducks fan added, “Accountability at every corner.”
Other fans, however, defended Marner, claiming he shouldn’t have to discuss his future at a charity event.
“Can you blame him? He’s been ridiculed in the media since they were ousted in round one. He’s doing a wonderful job here, and that should be the priority,” a supporter commented.
“There should be no #Leafs questions. “He’s doing an interview about his wonderful charity, and the content should be focused on that,” another fan commented.
Other followers accused Marner of organizing the charity event just for tax purposes.
“Main principles of the charity are his parents and a tax write off,” a supporter explained.
“No Leafs inquiries authorized, sooo Mitch, and why many want him gone. Just freely and honestly answer the questions, and maybe people will soften on him. “It’s why you make and raise millions, Mitchy,” an admirer added.
It’s evident that the majority of Maple Leafs fans are unhappy with Marner and believe he should have discussed his future with the team.
Marner Wants to Remain with Toronto
Although Marner will not discuss his future at the charity event, he stated in the year-end media that he intends to stay in Toronto.
“That would be the goal. I’ve proclaimed my affection for this location, this city. Obviously, I have grown up here. We’ll think about it now and attempt to figure something out… “It means everything to me,” Marner told the journalists on May 6.
“To be honest, we’re treated like Gods here, which you greatly enjoy. The affection and attention you receive from this fan base are unlike any other. You saw with the (NBA’s Toronto) Raptors a couple of years ago how much supporters still care for a lot of those players (who helped them win a title in 2019) that they had to deal off this year. “That’s the love you seek,” Marner concluded.
Marner was selected fourth overall in the 2015 NHL draft by the Maple Leafs.
