SHOCKING CALL UP: The Philadelphia Phillies Have Let Go Of Utility Player and Have Called Up Top Prospect From Triple-A

The Philadelphia Phillies have released utility player Whit Merrifield and called back Weston Wilson from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Before the Phillies’ game against the Oakland Athletics on Friday night, President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski announced the following changes. The Phillies still owe Merrifield $3,010,753 of his $7 million salary, as well as a $1 million buyout for his 2025 team option.

Merrifield, 35, appeared in 53 games for the Phillies this season, starting 20 in left field, 12 at second base, and eight at third base. He batted.199 with 11 RBIs and 21 runs in 174 plate appearances.
On February 19, the Phillies signed Merrifield as a free agent.

Wilson returns to the Phillies for the second time this season. On June 9, the 29-year-old made his season debut against the New York Mets in London. He has batted.315 with 10 home runs and 20 RBIs in 20 games with the IronPigs since being demoted.

Wilson signed the Philadelphia Phillies as a free agent in January 2023.
